IPD scan bodies for accurate CAD/CAM position transfer

What comes after the scan body?IPD Solutions Map · clinic ↔ laboratory

A scan body is the digital coordinate reference for an implant, analog or abutment. Its geometry must exactly match the library used.

The IPD Scan Abutment streamlines intraoral and laboratory scanning and helps capture implant position for subsequent prosthetic design and manufacturing. The portfolio includes solutions for single crowns and multi-unit restorations and integrates with IPD CAD libraries.

Why the scan body is critical

Accurate design begins with an accurate digital reference

CAD software cannot see the implant directly. It derives position and orientation from the scan body and its library geometry. An error in this pair can propagate through the entire prosthetic restoration.

Readable geometry

Advanced geometry helps capture orientation and position in both intraoral and laboratory scans.

Accurate matching

The scanned geometry is matched in CAD software to the corresponding platform and library branch.

Crowns and frameworks

The portfolio includes variants for single crowns and multi-unit frameworks.

Broad scanner compatibility

The solution is designed for major intraoral and desktop scanning systems on the market.

Selection by level and indication

First determine exactly what you are scanning

The term scan body covers several different protocols. The decisive factors are the prosthetic level, restoration type and library used for design.

Implant-level scan body
IMPLANT LEVEL

Implant-level scanning

Digital recording of a specific implant connection and its orientation. Verify the manufacturer, model, platform and scan-body reference.

MODEL / ANALOG

Laboratory and model scanning

A scan body can also transfer the position of an analog in a working model. The laboratory must preserve the same reference and library geometry used in the design.

Crown versus bridge

The library must know the intended restoration type

The Innovation Catalogue lists solutions for both single crowns and multi-unit frameworks. A specific scan body therefore cannot be selected from the platform alone.

CAD library

TECH and LITE are not interchangeable branches

Correct scan-body-to-library matching is more important than the name of the CAD system itself. Both routes can be accurate when they correspond to the scanning component actually used.

TECH LIBRARIES

IPD scanning solutions

TECH libraries connect to the IPD Scan Abutment or Scan Transfer. The design uses geometry prepared for the specific IPD reference, platform and intended component.

  • • verify the exact scan-body REF,
  • • select the correct platform and restoration type,
  • • do not mix files from a different library branch,
  • • restart the CAD software after updating the library.
LITE LIBRARIES

Supported OEM and third-party scan bodies

LITE libraries support optimised workflows with selected original or third-party scan bodies. The exact product and recommended library must be verified, not just the implant brand.

  • • verify the manufacturer and reference of the scan body used,
  • • verify the library for the specific platform,
  • • confirm the seating interface and target component,
  • • contact technical support before design if anything is unclear.

From scanning component to completed prosthetic restoration

The scan body is the beginning of the digital branch, not the end. Accurate results require validation, the correct library, the intended component and final verification.

Pre-scan check

Six items the clinic and laboratory must share

1. Manufacturer and model

Not only the brand, but the exact implant line.

2. Platform

Diameter or designation of the prosthetic platform.

3. Scanning level

Implant, Multi-Unit abutment or analog in the model.

4. Exact scan body

Manufacturer, REF and, where applicable, crown or bridge variant.

5. Library branch

TECH, LITE, library version and CAD software.

6. Restoration type

Crown, bridge, full-arch and planned interface type.

Frequently asked questions

IPD scan bodies in practice

It transfers the position and orientation of an implant, analog or abutment into digital data. CAD software then assigns the corresponding library geometry.
This cannot be determined from the platform alone. IPD offers variants for single crowns and multi-unit restorations. Verify the exact REF, indexing and library branch.
TECH connects to IPD scanning solutions. LITE supports selected OEM or third-party scan bodies. The scan body and library must belong to the same geometric branch.
It is a related but different protocol. For full-arch work at Multi-Unit level, specialised transfers and ScanLogiQ validation may be appropriate.
Exklusiv Dent provides technical support to customers in the Czech and Slovak Republics when selecting the scan body, platform and corresponding CAD library.

Important information for use

Before intraoral use: sterilisation and inspection

A scan body is a precision component. Before intraoral scanning it must be processed according to the current instructions for use and must not be deformed by excessive tightening torque.

  • The product is supplied non-sterile; use the current instructions for use for the specific reference.
  • Before seating, check the cleanliness of the implant or abutment interface.
  • Tighten the scan body only using the method and torque specified by the manufacturer.
