ISO 9001 and ISO 13485: what quality management means for IPD components

IPD announced the renewal of its ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certifications through AENOR. Here is how to distinguish certification of a quality management system from conformity evidence for an individual medical device.

What IPD announced

The supplied company announcement reports that AENOR renewed IPD’s ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certifications. However, it does not provide an issue date, certificate numbers or validity dates. Those details and the precise scope must be checked against the current certificates.

ISO 9001: managing and improving processes

ISO 9001:2015 sets out requirements for a general quality management system. In the IPD context, it is relevant to controlled design, manufacturing, inspection, delivery, handling nonconformities and customer feedback. A certified process does not mean that every individual component has zero manufacturing deviation.

ISO 13485: specific requirements for medical devices

ISO 13485:2016 addresses quality management for organisations involved in the medical-device lifecycle. It emphasises documented controls, traceability, nonconformity handling, risk-based processes and regulatory requirements. On its official Quality page, IPD lists the scope of both certificates as the design, manufacture and distribution of dental abutments, prosthetic accessories and instruments.

What the certificates do not establish

ISO 13485 certification is not itself an EU MDR conformity certificate for every Ti-base, MUA or prosthetic screw. Nor does it establish passive fit, clinical outcomes or compatibility with every implant platform. Verify each REF using the relevant declaration of conformity, instructions for use, indications and technical specifications.

A practical check for clinics and laboratories

Maintain a clear chain: REF → LOT/UDI (where assigned) → instructions for use → compatibility → CAD library. When contacting technical support or reporting a complaint, provide the component reference and lot number; for digital cases also record the scanner, CAD software and library version.

How to read the announcement

The original announcement does not state the current certificate validity dates. We therefore do not treat it as standalone evidence for present-day validity or conformity of every marketed device.
