Mechanical security for prosthetic work

IPD fixation screws for dental implants

The correct screw is not determined by implant brand alone. The reference, platform, thread, head seat, screwdriver and manufacturer-specified torque all matter.

IPD offers standard titanium screws, very hard TiN, screws BLC with a tungsten-carbide-based surface and TPA solutions for angulated screw channels.

Compatibility chain

Six parameters must speak the same language

A screw is a small component with major responsibility. Substituting a seemingly similar reference can change head seating, thread engagement or preload transfer.

1

Implant system

The brand and exact implant model or abutment level.

2

Platform

Diameter and type of prosthetic connection, not merely the commercial name.

3

Screw-head seat

A flat, conical or specifically angled seat must match the component.

4

Thread and length

Metric size, body length and overall geometry determine safe engagement.

5

Driver

Unigrip, Torx, Hex, TPA or another system-specific geometry in the exact size.

6

Tightening torque

The value belongs to the specific reference, not generally to a material or brand.

Surface according to indication

Ti, TiN, BLC and TPA are not four colours of the same screw

Each variant addresses a different mechanical or design requirement. Surface treatment does not change the need to use the exact reference and prescribed torque.

Standard

Ti Grade V ELI

A reliable titanium solution for laboratory and clinical use, with broad availability across systems and dimensions.

Approximate hardness: 280-330 HV

Gold-coloured surface

TiN

Titanium nitride creates an exceptionally hard surface. IPD states up to a fivefold increase in wear resistance compared with untreated titanium.

Hardness up to: 2300 HV

Dark surface

BLC

A tungsten-carbide-based surface with very low friction supports higher clamping force and stability in mechanically demanding indications.

Approximate hardness: approximately 1,000 HV

Angulation

TPA

Specific geometry for angulated screw channels. Requires the corresponding library, screw and TPA screwdriver.

Torque: often 10–25 Ncm, always according to the reference

Preload and stability

Torque is the input. Controlled preload is the goal.

During tightening, part of the torque is consumed by friction and part creates tensile force in the screw. The BLC surface reduces friction and can support greater clamping force at the same torque. This is precisely why torque must not be increased arbitrarily or transferred from another reference.

Safety rule: the value on the current IPD label, blister and instructions takes precedence over the web table and older catalogue versions.

Controlled procedure

From screw identification to final tightening

The correct result comes from combining technical data with clean clinical technique, not from using a stronger hand.

01Verify the reference

System, platform, component and seat geometry.

02Select the screwdriver

Exact type and size with no play in the screw head.

03Check seating

The component must be fully and passively seated before tightening.

04Use a torque instrument

Calibrated ratchet or motor according to the protocol.

05Tighten to the specified value

Without exceeding it and without estimating by feel.

06Check the screw head

Without damage, contamination or incomplete engagement.

Common questions

Fixation screws in practice

Use the value specified for the exact reference. The surface variant alone is not a reason to change the torque.
Only if the specific system and library explicitly allow it. TPA geometry uses its own screw and corresponding screwdriver.
One brand may have multiple connections, platforms and abutment levels. The thread, head, length and torque may all differ.
The current product label, blister and IPD instructions take precedence over the website, an older catalogue or previous documentation.

Important information for use

The label decides: torque, non-sterile status and the correct screwdriver

The manufacturer-recommended tightening torque is stated on the label or blister of the specific fixation screw.

  • The value on the current packaging and in the instructions for use takes precedence over the web table.
  • Fixation screws are supplied non-sterile; follow the current instructions for use before use.
  • Do not interchange screws that look the same but have a different thread, seat or head type.
